The NEORTC (Northeast Ohio Regional Training Center) is a wrestling club based at Cleveland State University that is designed to serve the wrestling community in the Greater Cleveland area. In the evening of November 26, 2014, the NEORTC will have their 2nd annual reverse raffle fundraiser in downtown Cleveland. The event generates funding for the organization as it continues to promote the sport of wrestling and serve the wrestling community. With the purchase of a ticket, you will receive an evening dinner and beer at Karl’s Inn of the Barristers located at 1264 West Third St. Cleveland, Ohio 44115. Tickets for the event are $50.00 and will also earn you a chance to win the grand prize of $1,000.00.
Year round the NEORTC provides a free service for athletes to train and develop in the sport of wrestling; provided the athletes purchase a USA Wrestling membership and submit a waiver form. Three different levels of wrestling are supported by the organization; scholastic, collegiate, and the elite/Olympic level. The club is funded by donations and sponsorships from local businesses and/or individuals, and other fundraising events. Proceeds will contribute to many needs such travel expenses, training development, entry fees for competitions, and the overall development of athletes.
Last year the event raised enough money to cover the cost of travel and two competitions at the elite level. This year, we would like to purchase equipment such as wrestling singlets, t-shirts, and shorts, and continue to pay for expenses that make it possible for athletes to work toward their goals. We hope to raise $3,500.00 for this year’s event.
The club had an exceptional season last year as it advanced two members to the U.S. World Team Trials in Madison, Wisconsin. Elite athlete Dan Mitcheff, a native from northeast Ohio, earned his way to the World Team Trials this year through an impressive top three finish at the U.S. Freestyle National Open. Mitcheff has placed in the top six of the U.S. Open several times, and is a top contender at the 57kg weight class.
NEORTC’s Nick Corba, and current Cleveland State Viking, also qualified for the World Team Trials in the FILA Junior Greco-Roman division. His third place finish at FILA Junior Nationals secured his spot to the World Team Trials; Corba competed exceptionally well and went on to be a tournament finalist and world team alternate.
In the scholastic division, there were over 10 NEORTC members who placed in the top eight at the Ohio high school state tournament. On that list of state placers include individuals from St. Ignatius, Elyria, Bay, Clearview, Hudson, and more.
